Investigating the relationship between Light Spectrum, Crop Architecture and Flower Initiation
At Gavita International, we know that delivering value to growers requires more than supplying lighting systems. It requires understanding how crops respond to light and how that knowledge can be translated into practical growing strategies. To further strengthen this knowledge base, Gavita International has initiated a new research project in collaboration with HAS Green Academy of Applied Sciences. The project will focus on the effect of light spectrum on flower initiation in ever-bearing strawberries.
Strawberry growers are increasingly adopting LED lighting, but maintaining continuous flower initiation remains a challenge in some production systems. This project focuses on whether light spectrum can be used to influence plant architecture and canopy microclimate in a way that supports the initiation of new flowers. The trial will be conducted by students Dario and Emmy in the greenhouse facilities of HAS Green Academy, where different lighting strategies will be evaluated under controlled growing conditions. Detailed measurements will be performed on crop architecture, flower initiation, plant development and micro-climate within the canopy. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the development of stable, year-round strawberry production under LED lighting. While this project will not answer every question, we believe it will provide valuable insights into how lighting can be used to steer crop performance more effectively.
This research project also reflects another important objective: investing in the future of horticulture. By collaborating with HAS Green Academy and working closely with students, Gavita International contributes to the education and development of the next generation of growers and crop specialists.
