Planten kunnen voor fotosynthese alleen specifieke golflengten van licht gebruiken, namelijk die tussen de 400 en 700 nm. Het wordt gebruikt om de hoeveelheid licht aan te geven die per seconde door een lichtbron wordt uitgezonden, gemeten in \u00b5mol\/s. Om te bepalen hoeveel licht een plant ontvangt, moet de fotonenfluxdichtheid in het PAR-spectrum worden bepaald. Dit is de Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD), die de hoeveelheid fotosynthetisch actieve fotonen per vierkante meter per seconde aangeeft. DLI wordt gemeten in mol\/m\u00b2\/dag. Je kunt de DLI berekenen door de PPFD te vermenigvuldigen met de daglengte (en de eenheden aan te passen). Hoewel het relatief eenvoudig is om een grootheid zoals afstand tussen verschillende eenheden om te rekenen, is dit voor licht complexer. Bij (assimilatie)verlichting en natuurlijke straling geven deze eenheden aan hoeveel energie de fotonen van een lichtbron dragen. Dit maakt het mogelijk om hun impact op de energiebalans van de kas te berekenen. De energie-inhoud per foton hangt af van de golflengte; kortere golflengten hebben een hogere energie-inhoud per foton. Zo is de energie-inhoud van een foton van 400 nm (blauw) 1,75 keer hoger dan die van een foton van 700 nm (rood).
